National Panel Visits Philip Health Services

July 2, 2009
Looking for examples of strong rural health care systems, a national panel visited Philip Health Services on June 10. The objective of the panel was to gather ideas from successful facilities and make policy recommendations to the Department of Health and Human Services, thereby replicating these successful practices in facilities nationwide. Extensive coverage of the visit was provided by the Rapid City Journal. An excerpt:

When it comes to rural health care, it’s hard to get much more rural than Philip.

Yet the community, located about 85 miles from Rapid City, has a robust health care system, with a hospital, a clinic, a nursing home, an assisted living facility, a day care center and a home health agency. Philip Health Services employs two primary care physicians, a physician’s assistant and a nurse practitioner — a bonanza compared to most rural communities struggling to keep just one primary care provider.

“We are very lucky to have the practitioners we have,” said Kent Olson, chief executive of Philip Health Systems.

Philip’s success is exactly why members of the National Advisory Committee on Rural Health and Human Services visited the facilities and community on Wednesday.
